Brice Turnbull: ELECTRICAL STORM AND SUNRISE OF IMAGINATION

Brice Turnbull grew up in York and graduated in York High School’s class of 1990. (Art Club photo from 1990 Y.H.S. DUKE yearbook.)

A glass art class at Chadron State College piqued his interest; he had originally intended to become a watercolorist.

After a few years’ “apprentice” type work in an art glass studio, a thermometer factory, and a three-year stint as a long-haul truck driver to build a capital nest egg, Brice set up his HammerLane Glass — later BRICE TURNBULL GLASS — studio near Emporia, Kansas. He started exhibiting and selling his work, including an annual fall show at his parents’ home in York.

ELECTRICAL STORM AND SUNRISE OF IMAGINATION  grew out of a conversation between the library director and the artist.  It is an elaboration of the “platter” work he was doing at the time.  Brice’s glass art explores the interplay of light and color.   The ELECTRICAL STORM colors are dark blues, grays, and silver of a Plains thunderstorm.   SUNRISE replaces them with the vibrant hues seen when the remnant of a thunderstorm is present to the east at dawn.   The entire piece consists of the “platter” and iron stand, the back light source with a hand-blown multi-colored glass shade that enhances the rosy color of the back lighting, and a book which incorporated a remote control to switch the back lighting on when the cover was opened. It was presented to the library in November, 2003.                              [Right: platter front] platter

Meanwhile, Brice met Tara Gale, who had a studio in nearby Cottonwood Falls where she fashioned one-of-a-kind jewelry from wire, stone, and glass.

They subsequently married and moved to Salida, Colorado were they work and share their arts at Sunlight Studios. The following links bring up some un-captioned images (use your browser’s “back button” to return to this page):
