Geocaching and Waymarking at Kilgore Memorial Library

Geocaching and waymarking use Global Positioning System (G.P.S.) receivers and coordinates for recreational, educational, and social activities.

For explanations of these activities, please refer to geocaching or waymarking.

Kilgore Memorial Library coordinated geocache programs with York Parks and Recreation and York County 4-H in 2007 and 2008(1) ; 2008(2), and continues to work with both agencies on collaborative programs.
The library sponsored the geocache events in the 2008 and 2009 York Summer Games. The library’s Flickr(r) photo set 2008 SUMMER GEOCACHING and the earliest entries in THEN / NOW PAIRS are mementos of those programs.
The library plans to continue introducing people to G.P.S. based activities, and sponsor future SUMMER GAMES geocache events.

Kilgore Memorial Library has several Garmin etrex GPS receivers for use with these programs. They also can be borrowed by individuals or groups who want to try geocaching / waymarking.
Several of the “Artistic Water Towers” we’ve identified were located several years ago through geocaching.com and more recently through waymarking’s Water Towers category.

Summer, 2009 update: The library has joined geocaching.com and waymarking.com. The library’s initial efforts include one geocache (GC1RZAW) and several entries at waymarking.com. The waymarked sites represent significant local civic and historic features.

Take a look at waymarking’s Vintage Ad Locations and Photos Then and Now categories. Filter by 68467 — York’s ZIP Code — for annotated snippets of local history. Some are cross-referenced to photos in FLICKR (tm), and some have links to past feature articles in the York News-Times electronic archives.
