Visual and plastic arts have always been a feature of York’s public library. A photograph of the interior of the first York Public Library building taken shortly after it was built in 1902 shows large framed prints of Stratford-On-Avon and Shakespeare displayed on two walls of the Reception Room. Long-time York residents will recall the cast plaster panel of frolicking cherubs displayed in the children’s area of the old building. Fine art is a vast area of human endeavor and an essential facet of humanity’s communication of ideas and ideals. The “hallway gallery” leading to the library’s meeting rooms and the Elmer Baker Memorial Display Case feature rotating displays. The display schedule is included in the library’s event calendar. The library has some art reproductions displayed, including a book theme woven throw and a small bronze of a girl reading. Some views of the library’s art displays are posted in a FLICKR set.
