Past and Present Library Board Members

The following list of persons who have served on York’s Library Board is incomplete; 20 years’ worth of Library Board minutes are missing, and going through the City Council minutes to retrieve the names is a daunting challenge. Many of the early names (indicated by *) were copied from a 1935 YORK REPUBLICAN article about the library’s history, and may include board members for the collections before 1894.

A Library Board was appointed when the City of York began supporting the library in 1894. The Women’s Club Library, High School Library and Y.M.C.A. collections were merged for the initial York Public Library collection. Three members from each agency formed the Board. Board members served three-year terms. In 1919, the Board was restructured to five members, with five-year terms.
